The Georgia Institute of Technology, commonly known as Tech, Georgia Tech or simply GT, is a public, coeducational research university in Atlanta, which is the capital and the most populated city in the US state of Georgia, as well as one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in USA. Atlanta is also known as the 3rd largest city in the States, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 540 000 inhabitants (2008).
GT was founded in 1885, being then known as Georgia School of Technology, as a part of the Reconstruction plan to build an industrial economy, after the Civil War in Southern USA. The school changed its name in 1948, reflecting its evolution from a simple trade school to a larger technical institute and research university, becoming Georgia Institute of Technology, which remained the same today.
Since it was founded, GT quickly grew, having today an enrollment of over 20 000 graduate and undergraduate students, as well as nearly 1000 faculty members. The university is constantly high ranked by various education-related magazines, remaining in the top 10 public universities list in USA, for the last 10 years.
The athletic teams from GT are officially known as the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, being also nicknamed the Engineers or the Ramblin’ Wreck, who compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, within the Atlantic Coast Conference. GT was also a member of the Southeastern Conference, in which the teams have played until 1964. The university has a total of 17 varsity sports, being best known for its athletic programs in football, women’s and men’s basketball, including baseball.
